Summary: Our favorite agents struggle for understanding. Disclaimer: They aren't mine nor anyone's but CC, Fox, 1013, DD, and GA's. Author's Notes: This is a completed story in two parts. that jumped into my brain and flowed out. Don't blame me. I was obviously channeling. Frohike, thanks again! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< How well do you think you know someone? I mean after seven years of partnership, don't you think you would know what is in the heart and mind of your partner? What the hell? I never really knew Scully until now. Seven damn years of loving her and I only found her now. Just in time to lose her forever. If you had asked me a month ago what Scully was like I could have told you. I could have given you Scully in twenty-five words or less. Loyal, intelligent, beautiful, compassionate, doctor, scientist, friend-word after word would have fallen off my tongue. I knew it all. I knew nothing. I didn't know how hurt she was over Diana. I can't believe that she doesn't know that Diana means nothing to me. I haven't been interested in another woman for years-not since she was returned to me and I realized my true feeling for her. I never felt good enough for Scully. Telling her I love her would be the ultimate fuck up. She deserves so much more than a relationship with someone as screwed up as I. I didn't know that she harbored "feelings" for me-that her involvement with the X-files was personal. I didn't know she had a bad case of the seven year itch and had decided if I wasn't going to scratch it she would find someone else that would. If she wanted to get out of the car why did she have to do it at 90 mph? Who knew? Obviously Dr. Adam Fucking Miller did. He slunk in like a hyena after a lion's kill. He stalked her and wore her down until he was able to steal Scully right out from under my nose-my considerably big nose. What a fool I am. I might as well shoot myself now. If I lose Scully, my life is over anyway. If I smile and make nice I at least get to keep her as my partner-for a while. Until he's transferred or they adopt a child or what the hell, any of the excuses he's likely to come up with to get her away from me. Now, all I can do is smile and congratulate the little fuck if I want to keep Scully in my life at all. Huh. What the hell? Who would have thought that Scully would ask me to walk her down the aisle? And ask the Gunmen and me to stand up for her instead of bridesmaids? What does that say about who's important in her life? Why didn't I realize that she loves me as I love her? I love her with all the intensity and desire I am capable of. Half my heart is being gouged out. As I hand her over to that shit I feel like moaning and keening with the pain or taking out my gun and killing him. How can I let her go? I know she loves me too. I felt it in the way her fingers clung to mine. I saw it in her eyes as I gave her hand to that bastard. I also saw resignation and courage and sorrow. Scully! Don't do this. I'll die without you. You've saved my worthless hide so many times in the past! Don't fail me now, partner. I need you. I can't live without you! I love you. And that's the reason I will let you go. I love you enough to want you to be happy and safe. Without me in your life you have a chance at both of those things. I love you enough to let you go. Goodbye my love. What am I going to do? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Who would have thought it would come to this? Dr. and Mrs. Adam Miller. In ten minutes I will be Mrs. Adam Miller, Special Agent Dana Miller, Dr. Dana Miller. D.S.M. How many times have I written those initials? Of course I thought it would stand for Dana Scully Mulder at the time. Who knew? I thought Mulder at least loved me as a friend. I didn't aspire to him falling "in love" with me. I could have handled all the "in love" parts for us both. I am a realist, if nothing else. After all, I'm not six feet tall with legs up to my throat and boobs out to Delaware. I just wanted him to need me, to cling to me and gather strength from me. God? What am I going to do? I am in love with my partner of seven years, but I've accepted the proposal of a good decent man. A man who came right out and told me he knows I love Mulder, but he can live with that. He's in love with me. He wants to build a life with me. He trusts me to be honorable and faithful to my vows. I always thought that it would be me and Mulder at the alter. If nothing else, we're just plain old used to each other. Who would put up with either one of us? I thought I could outwait him. That eventually he would wake up some day and decide to marry his best friend. What a fool I was. Diana Fowley showed me the error of my ways. After years away she shows up and Mulder is all over her like white on rice. And she, the bitch, has him by the balls. She flits in and out of his life and he's always willing to let her back in. It's only a matter of time before he tells me he wants me to transfer out so that he can have Diana as his partner again. Oh, yeah. I know all about their "partnership". If you think that the gossip pool was crazy for Mulder and Scully stories you should hear some that were floating around about Mulder and Fowley. I've had a variety of people let me know that I'm out and Diana's in. Even Skinner has hinted at it. I didn't think it was true until our confrontation at the Gunmen's. Personal! I'll show him personal. Damn it Mulder! Why did you have to break my heart? Why did you have to reject my presence in your life even as your partner. I could have been okay with your personal involvement with another woman, even Diana. I just can't stand your lack of respect for me. I love you, loved you, you stupid shit. And you just threw it all away. Or did I when I accepted Adam? Well, it's too late now. I've already submitted my transfer request to Skinner. I would go mad if I worked with you and you touched my back as we walked together. It can't happen-not even once. I certainly can't stand watching her take my place by your side. I will take out my gun and shoot the bitch the first time I have to watch you touch her as you've touched me for so many years. Quantico has a position open for me. The hours are good and the pay is actually slightly more. It's the company that will be lacking. But you don't know that yet. I doubt you would have agreed to walk me down the aisle and stand up for me if you did. You will hate me when you find out. I don't care. Maybe that will make it easier. I had to have you by my side this one last time. All my "men" there by me to give me enough courage to do this. Adam is a good man. I know I can trust him. I had the boys check him out before I accepted the second date. But he's not you, Mulder. And now I'm walking down this aisle and when I walk back up it, I'll only have half a heart. I can see Mom now. She's crying. She knows she's losing Mulder too. She's loved him like a son for a long time. There's Bill-alternately scowling and smiling. He's glad I'm leaving Mulder. There's Charlie, frowning. He knows how I feel about Mulder and doesn't approve of this wedding. Why does this feel more like a hostage exchange than a wedding? Mulder! Do something! Save me! Save me like you always have done before! Damn it Mulder, if you went to Antarctica to save me, you should be willing to rescue me now. You've always been there for me, and for that I will be eternally indebted to you. Thank you, my love. But, I should be grateful for the past and let you go on to your future too. I love you Mulder. With all my heart and forever, but I want you to be happy. Goodbye my love. God help me, what have I done? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The drone of the priest is the only sound in the room. ". . . speak now or forever hold your peace." The silence is deafening. The priest smiles with confidence at the bride and groom and prepares to continue. "STOP!" <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Well, who do you think stopped the wedding? I have an ending, but I would love to hear from some of you as to your thoughts on the bravest person in the room. Please e-mail me at FatCat926@msn.com and let me know your thoughts. Who knows? Maybe your ending is better than mine. Title: WHO KNEW? Author's Notes: This is a story in two parts. that jumped into my brain and flowed out. Don't blame me. I was obviously channeling. Thank you FoR all the entertaining responses I received. Bill Scully was the leading candidate, followed by Skinner, Frohike, and Mulder. I like mine! I hope you do too! Frohike, thanks again! >>>>>>>>>>>>> The drone of the priest was the only sound in the room. ". . . speak now or forever hold your peace." The silence was deafening. The priest smiled with confidence at the bride and groom and prepared to continue. "STOP!" >>>>>>>>>>>>> The collective gasps emitted from the gathering had a decibel level in the danger zone. Everyone swiveled around to see who had yelled. Everyone except Mulder and Scully. They had turned to face one another. Anyone not knowing what was going on would have thought that the duo gazing deeply into one another's eyes were the potential bride and groom. At first it looked as if no one was going to own up to the declaration. The rumblings in the crowd grew louder and louder until someone shouted! "Look! Up in the balcony!" A right hand appeared over the wooden handrail. Again the crowd gasped. The hand was bloodied at the knuckles and handcuffed to something. "Oh my God, Dana! Only you would have a wedding straight from The Graduate!" Charlie crowed. Mulder heard Frohike mutter, "It's more like something from Stephen King's The Dead Zone!" That comment made him break eye contact with Scully to look up at the balcony. A loud growl was heard and another hand appeared-a feminine left hand attached to the other end of the handcuffs. Then the male left hand. Finally a figure hoisted himself up from behind the solid half-wall of the balcony. Total pandemonium. Heads whipped back and forth between the altar and the balcony. There were two Dr. Adam Millers. "Stop! I'm Adam Miller and I don't want to marry anyone! No offence, Dana." The bedraggled man, swaying by the railing of the balcony, looked down at the floor by his feet. "Get up here, you bitch!" He yanked a woman to her feet. "Does anyone know who this is?" Several of the crowd knew exactly who was standing battered and bedraggled, handcuffed to Adam Miller. "Oh my God! It's Diana Fowley!" "I thought she was transferred!" "What's she got to do with this?" Comments from the crowd continued. AD Skinner stood up and motioned for a couple of the agents seated close to him to go up and bring both parties down. "Quiet everyone! We'll get to the bottom of this." Skinner turned quickly and yelled. "Stop that man!" The counterfeit groom was backing out of the room. A number of agents and friends of Adam Miller jumped towards him, but he was quicker. He drew a gun and waved them off. "Careful, don't touch him! If he's who I think he is, he can kill all of us with his green blood." Mulder shouted. "Oh, for crying out loud, Mulder. Can't you keep your crazy ideas to yourself. Do you have to spout them even here at Dana's wedding? Nobody believes your bullshit!" Bill Scully spat out, moving toward the man's right side. "What is he, Mulder? One of your little green men?" Tom Colton laughed and started towards his left. "I guess they don't believe you, Mulder. Too bad. I'd hate to take the whole bunch of you with me. You better get them to stop!" The fake bridegroom slowly backed toward the door. "Bill! Don't be an ass! Listen to Mulder. I've seen something like this guy before and I know what he can do! Tom! Stop!" Dana was terrified that someone would wound him and people would die. While Mulder's words only incurred scorn, the real terror in Scully's voice stopped both men cold. "You always were the voice of reason, Dana." The counterfeiter said and proceeded to morph into a little grey. "I guess I don't get my wedding night after all, huh, Scully?" He shifted back to his usual hulking self. He grinned as he said, "Too bad! I was actually looking forward to turning into Mulder just as you. . ." "That's enough!" Mulder growled. "Get out of here before I forget that I care about how many people could die if I shoot you. Remember, I've killed your kind before and I would love to do it again." He had his gun in his hand and moved to stand beside Scully. As if to taunt Mulder one final time the alien morphed into Scully. "After I killed Scully I was going to show you a good time, Mulder. Seven years of waiting-surely you deserved to get laid once before you died." He quickly morphed back to his regular persona and exited the building, laughing. For a full minute, you could have heard a pin drop. That quickly changed as screams erupted and several bodies hit the floor. Bill Scully and Tom Colton were the first two to keel over. The panic that had frozen everyone where they sat ended and people began to react. The agents who helped Adam and his prisoner down to the first floor escorted them up the aisle to Skinner. Mulder and Scully moved to stand beside him. "Can someone remove this handcuff? I've been attached to this piece of shit long enough." Adam Miller was still running on adrenalin. "And can someone explain to me why she would kidnap me and hold me hostage?" Mulder and Scully looked at Diana but she wouldn't return their stare. Mulder turned to Scully and smiled. Scully sighed and blushed. Skinner had had just about enough of the entire situation. "All right! Agent Scully start talking. You two seem to be the only ones that have a clue as to what is happening here," he growled. "Well, Sir. Agent Mulder and I don't know all the details, but it seems that after my first date with Adam, he was kidnapped by Fowley and the Alien Bounty Hunter. When I agreed to marry the replicated Adam and turned in my transfer..." "No! Scully!" Mulder groaned. "No..." Scully turned and placed her fingers on Mulders lips. Once again their eyes met and Mulder calmed. Scully turned to the AD again and continued. "I suspect that he was to be killed as soon as the marriage had taken place and they had effectively separated and or neutralized Mulder and I. More likely, they would have probably killed us all and made it look like a murder/suicide." Scully looked at Mulder and he nodded his agreement. "Adam, the real Dr. Miller, escaped and brought his captor, Fowley, here to stop the wedding. I have no idea how he escaped or how he even knew about the ceremony. The being that replaced Adam was one of the aliens everyone laughs at Mulder about. He is one of the alien bounty hunters that has plagued us and killed so many, Cassandra Spender, for example." "Oh, Dana." Mrs. Scully was shocked into exclaiming. Everyone looked toward Adam Miller to complete the story. "She's right about the kidnapping. I sure didn't know what I was getting into when I asked you out, Dana. You live too close to the edge for me. I hope you understand that there will be no wedding." Adam Miller was a careful man and wanted no long- lasting entanglement with the delightful but dangerous Dr. Dana Scully. "Oh, for crying out loud, guy! You'd let a little thing like danger turn you against marriage to Scully?" Frohike interjected. "You don't deserve to be called a man!" Skinner glared at him and looked back to Adam. "Continue, please." "I have no idea how I was taken. I woke up in a locked room and have been isolated there ever since." "How did you escape?" Langly asked. "How did you know today was the wedding?" Byers wanted to know. Adam Miller began to blush. He was obviously distressed by the next part of his narrative. "I... a... There was a... I had a vision. That's it. That's what she must have been. A vision." "Calm down, Dr. Miller. Take your time. Do you need to sit down?" Skinner could tell Adam Miller was about to crumple. "Yes, thank you." Adam sat down and gathered his thoughts. "I don't know who she was or how she got in my cell. She was a pretty little thing about 14 or 15, I guess. I woke up this morning and this young girl was standing over me. I know it sounds crazy, but she was there. She told me that they were coming to kill me, that my counterpart was marrying Dana today and I would no longer be needed." He passed a shaky hand over his eyes. "She must have been a vision, because I couldn't touch her. She had no mass. She finally convinced me she was telling me the truth. She told me what to do to get the drop on my captor." He glared at Fowley. "When that one came in the room to take me away to kill me the young girl popped up at her and scared her into a dead faint. By then, I was glad that I wasn't the only one that could see her. I was beginning to doubt my sanity." "My savior told me I didn't have much time, I had to get here to stop this wedding. I was trying to handcuff this woman when she came to. We struggled and she handcuffed herself to me. I... I guess I lost it and punched her out." Adam Miller was blushing now. "I had to drag her out to the car my erm... friend said was waiting and I found the wedding invitation on the front seat. I got here as soon as I could but no one was here yet. I was afraid her partner would discover us missing, so I dragged her up here to hide until the everyone arrived." "I had to... punch her out to keep her from overpowering me while I rested. I guess I passed out from the effort of getting here and woke up just before I spoke." "What happened to the young girl you saw in the room? Did she come with you?" Mulder was curious. "What was her name." "After I left the room, I didn't see her again. I wouldn't be sure I actually saw her if I hadn't seen her effect on my kidnapper." Adam thought for a while. "She didn't give me a name, but when I asked her why she was helping me she said because she needed to help her butt-munch brother." "Her what?" Mulder had turned white as a ghost! "Butt-munch. She called someone her butt munch brother and she giggled." "Samantha!" Mulder said, tears beginning to slide down his face. "Oh, Mulder. She saved us!" Scully moved to hug Mulder. Skinner wanted to dissuade the crowd from watching Mulder and Scully. He cleared his throat loudly and said, "What have you got to say for yourself, Ms. Fowley?" Diana Fowley lifted her head and haughtily said, "Agent Fowley to you." "Not for long, Diana." Skinner spat back. "Kidnapping is a federal offence and I am sure Dr. Miller will be happy to press charges against you." Skinner was in his glory. Mulder and Scully's quest was vindicated at last. Too many people-good, steady people-had seen the alien shape shift for there ever to be a question about the validity of the X Files again. Scully was no longer going to marry Adam Miller and wouldn't be transferring. And best of all, it looked as if Mulder and Scully were finally going to realize what everyone else had known all along. He spoke as he turned toward them. "Well, Scully, now that you're not going to be getting married, I guess I can tear up your transfer order." Everyone turned toward Scully for her response, only to see Mulder and Scully already at the side door. Scully looked at Mulder and back to Skinner standing next to her mother. She laughed. "Don't be too sure about the marriage being off, Sir. I still want my leave time." "Since I think there's definitely going to be a honeymoon I'm going to need a couple weeks off too, Sir!" Mulder grabbed Scully's hand and started out the door. Scully stopped at the last minute and tossed her bouquet to the crowd. Mulder peeked over her shoulder just in time to see Frohike grab the bouquet out of AD Skinner's arms. How well do you think you know someone? Maybe Frohike would be next! Who knew?
