With a week's vacation, that was well deserved, it had become a reality as Mulder slowly stepped up on the porch. The fragrant vines of jasmine wound around the railings, giving off a heady sweet scent. He stood for a moment, watching the blue jays swoop down to gather up the variety of bugs that spring had to offer. He unlocked the door, pushed it open, stepped inside and set his duffle bag and cooler next to the couch. He wandered over to the fireplace and noticed a photograph of his mother's parents in a silver antique picture frame. He smiled from the memories of a happier time. He turned, uncovered the furniture, sending a light sheen of dust into the air causing him to sneeze. He folded the sheets and was putting them away when his cell phone rang. "Mulder." "Hey, it's me. What are you doing?" "Waiting for you. When will you be here? I miss you Scully. It's damned lonely up here all by myself." "That's why I'm calling. I don't think I'm gonna be able to make it, Mulder." "Scul...leee. You know we've planned this vacation for over a month. What could be so..." There was a knock at the door, interrupting his conversation. "Damn. Hang on Scully, someone's at the door. But I can't imagine who would be coming all the way out here." He almost dropped the phone when he opened the door. His heart skipped a beat at the sight before him and then he laughed. "Scully!!" "Rootbeer, Mulder." The End. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Brevity II Challenge Response to my own elements: jasmine, sneeze, antique picture frame, cabin, rootbeer, cell phone, bugs * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
