You son-of-a ..." she yelled when a hand pulled at her blouse and her purse ripped from her shoulder. Kelly turned just in time to see her attacker running, purse in hand, down the sidewalk and around the corner. Rage took hold, knowing that her life's savings was hidden within that purse. Without thinking of her own safety, she was off and running after the brown jacketed, short male figure. Just as the assailant turned the corner into an alley, a tall man stepped out of the deli which happened to occupy that very corner. Kelly tried to side-step him but, as was always her luck, she plowed right into him. The man grunted as his hands, now free of the bag and drink tray he was carrying, gripped her arms, preventing her from tumbling to the ground. With an annoyed huff of breath, she jerked from his grasp, turned and started to run again. "Hey! Wait!" The tall, lanky man yelled in her direction. "I can't. That man just stole my purse. I've got to get my purse back. I can't wait," she yelled back at him as she rounded the corner. Kelly blindly ran deep into the alley and then stopped short when she saw her attacker standing, slightly slumped over, barely concealed by the dumpster, digging through her purse. His dirty brown jacket giving him away. A whimper escaped her lips before she could stop it when a large hand clasped her shoulder. She whirled around, ready to defend herself, when she came face to face with the man she had run into in front of the deli. "Don't," was all he said in a breathless whisper. He motioned for her to stay put and with a finger to his lips, begged with his eyes for her silence. Kelly nodded and slid to the side, with her back to the brick wall, out of the other man's line of vision. He was so wrapped up in his recently acquired spoils, the short man did not hear or see the Good Samaritan slowly and quietly sneaking up behind him. The diminuitive male gave a startled yelp as the tall man grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back, causing him to drop the purse he had been rummaging through. With quick reflexes, the taller man had the assailant in handcuffs, shoved down and sitting with his back against the dumpster, his legs spread out before him. He pulled his cell phone from an inner pocket of his leather jacket and dialed 911, giving the operator all the pertinent information before hanging up. He retrieved the now-ripped and filthy purse from the ground, making sure all its contents were replaced and then turned to Kelly. She stood, frozen in her place against the wall, staring at the lanky man, in total amazement. She didn't, couldn't move until he beckoned her closer. "It's okay. He won't hurt you, now." His soft voice tempted her out of the daze in which she had been temporarily trapped. She began to move and then walked faster to his side. Kelly looked down at the man who was now cuffed and a rage started to build within her. She wanted to rant and rave. Kick him until he felt as scared of her as she was of him only moments before. She stared at the filth sitting at her feet until a soft voice drew her attention upward to the man standing beside her. "Is this your purse, miss? Is this the man who attacked you?" "Yes," she replied, now holding the ruined purse. "Yes, this is mine and yes, he's the one who stole it from me. Thank you. Thank you so much. Are you a cop or something?" "Something. My name is Mulder. Fox Mulder. I used to be with the F.B.I.," he introduced himself as he pulled his wallet from his pocket and produced an older ID for her inspection. With a nod of her head he continued. "Are you okay?" "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine," she replied and then held out her hand to shake his. "Thank you again, Mr. Mulder. My name is Kelly. Kelly Scully." "Mulder. Just call me Mulder. Nice to meet you Kelly Scul ..." he abruptly stopped and clasped her hand tighter in his own. "Did you say ... Scully?" With a nod and a raised eyebrow, she cocked her head to the side and looked into his wide green eyes. "You wouldn't happen to know a Dana Katherine Scully, would you?" he asked as he took in the red hair, blue eyes and petite stature. "Yes. She's my cousin. Why do you ask?" she threw back, suspiciously. "She was my partner at the F.B.I. Scully ... Dana never mentioned you were visiting. Does she know you're here in D.C.?" Kelly eyed him curiously and then shook her head. "No. Dana doesn't know I'm here. I haven't seen her or Aunt Maggie since Melissa's funeral. I just only arrived here about an hour ago. Thought I would look around a bit until she ..." Kelly was interrupted by the sound of sirens and tires squealing to a stop at the entrance to the alley. Mulder and Kelly turned to the officers as they exited their car. Mulder lifted his ID up for the officers to see and then told them what he knew. After information was exchanged and Kelly's statement taken, she was instructed to report to the station the following morning, at Mulder's request, since she had not had a chance to get accomodations since her very recent arrival. After the officers took the attacker away, Kelly checked her purse and was relieved to see that everything was still there. She turned to Mulder with a grateful smile and then they made their way out of the alley. "Kelly, I was taking Dana some lunch when we ran into each other," he started with a quirky smile. "Would you like to go back with me? I'm sure she would love to see you. She'll probably leave work early today." "Sure. I guess now is as good a time as any." She glanced up at him and then her eyes went wide. "Oh my. I ruined your lunch. I'm so sorry. The least I can do is pay for another." "Won't be necessary," he replied with a wave of his hand. As they rounded the corner, Mulder noticed his purchases were no longer spread out on the sidewalk. The only evidence was a large wet spot where the drinks had spilled. He opened the door to the deli and ushered her in. The older woman behind the counter smiled as he approached and sat a bag and a tray of drinks before him. "Thought you might be back for this. I saw what happened and fixed you another. I'm sure Dana is starving by now." Mulder quickly looked at his watch, told Kelly to order anything she wanted and then excused himself. Laughter from the woman made him smile once again. Kelly looked at Mulder and then back at the older woman. A quick glance at the tag on her blouse revealed her name to be Darlene. "Excuse me, Darlene. But, do you know Mulder and Dana?" "Yes. They've been coming here for years. Even after Mulder left the F.B.I. he still comes by everyday and gets Dana's lunch." Darlene nodded in Mulder's direction and continued with a chuckle. "He's calling Dana to let her know why he's late with her lunch. From what he tells me, she's like a bear when she gets hungry and extremely irritable if he's late. He says now that she's eating for two, she keeps him on his toes." Darlene watched with fondness as Mulder paced back and forth talking in apologetic hushed whispers. She looked back at Kelly and asked, "What can I get for you? Mulder will be upset with me if I don't insist on getting you something, too. What will it be?" Kelly started to protest, then shrugged and ordered. Darlene was quick and back by the time Mulder had finished his call. "Well, are we all set here? Darlene, how much do I owe you?" Mulder asked as he reached for his wallet. "Not a thing, Mulder. On the house today ... after all, you're the hero. Now, you better get that to little Moma before she comes looking for you," she said laughing. "Thanks, Darlene. You're a gem," he said with a sparkle in his eyes. "If that sweet little thing comes to her senses and kicks you out, you come here, Moma Darlene will take care of you." Seeing Mulder's red face, she laughed even harder and shooed them out the door. x x x x x x x Mulder pushed the half closed door open with his foot and cautiously looked around. He frowned not seeing Scully sitting at her desk but breathed a relieved sigh seeing her jacket still draped across the back of her chair. Kelly entered the office and carefully made her way through the stacks of boxes and files, taking in the various pictures and unusual paraphernalia sprinkled throughout. Mulder and Kelly turned toward the door when they heard the elevator door open and the clicking of heels approaching. Mulder couldn't help but smile when Scully entered, an open bag of sunflower seeds in her hand. For the past two months Scully had been craving the tiny salted treats and would not give Mulder the satisfaction of knowing that she had been squirelling them away for several years now. Scully waddled, as Mulder called it, over to him and grinned. "It's about time you got here, I'm starving. But, I forgive you since you were unintentionally held up. I swear Mulder, trouble seems to find you no matter where you are. You took my handcuffs from the nightstand this morning. I swear, Mulder, I don't know what I'm goining to do with you," Scully said distractedly as she rummaged through the bag and pulled her sandwich out, grabbed a drink and sat heavily in her chair with a grateful sigh. At the clearing of his throat, she looked up, mid-bite. "Scully, you have a visitor," he said, nodding in Kelly's direction and smirking. Kelly smiled when Scully followed Mulder's nod and with wide eyes, dropped her sandwich. Mulder quickly walked around her desk and helped a struggling Scully up from her chair. "Kelly! What are you doing here? When did you get here? Where are you staying? How long are you going to be here? Have you seen Mom yet?" Scully excitedly fired off the questions while she wobbled her way, as quickly as her heavy girth would allow, to her cousin. Kelly couldn't help but stare at her cousin's rather large belly. Then reached out and hugged her. "When did this happen? I didn't even know you were married? Whose the lucky stiff?" Kelly fired off her own questions. The two red-heads smiled at each other as Mulder looked on in fascination. "I thought it was about time I came for a visit. I'd only gotten here a little while ago. Thought I would get a hotel room, so if you have any suggestions, I'd be grateful. My plans aren't definite right now. I haven't had a chance to call Aunt Maggie yet," Kelly replied, hugging Scully again. "Um ... I'm due in about four weeks. I got married three months ago. And the lucky stiff is sitting over there," Scully replied and then laughed when Kelly's blue eyes went unbelievably wide and glanced over at Mulder, who was grinning from ear to ear. "Mulder, you bastard. Why didn't you tell me? All this time and you never said a word." Mulder smiled but didn't speak, then rose from the chair and slowly walked up behind Scully, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Scully, since your maternity leave starts tomorrow, why don't you cut out early today? You weren't planning on staying much longer anyway and I'm sure Kelly wouldn't mind following us back home," Mulder said as he kissed her cheek. A delicate blush graced Scully's cheek from Mulder's affectionate attention and Kelly's giggle. "Mulder," she quietly warned. "Well ... I suppose, since it is Friday and my last day, no one would care if I left early." "Great. Let's get out of here," Mulder eagerly said with another kiss to her cheek. "Sounds good to me," Kelly chimed in. They rebagged their lunches, gathered Scully's belongings and quickly left, securing the door behind them. * * * * * * * After an afternoon of laughter, catching up and tripping down memory lane, Scully called her mother. She was told that Kelly was more than welcome to stay with her and promptly chastised her for not calling sooner. Bill would be in town over the weekend for a visit, but she was still welcomed. Mulder and Scully eagerly invited Kelly to stay with them, Scully knowing of her cousin and Bill's past history. She would be staying with Maggie upon Bill's departure. The rest of the day and on into the evening was spent watching movies, eating popcorn and laughing at Mulder's worst jokes. During their conversations, Kelly had mentioned her birthday was the next day. Plans made for the following day, Mulder and Scully retired to their bedroom while Kelly gladly retreated to the guest room for the night with the promise from them that they would take her out for her 30th birthday. * * * * * * * Saturday Morning Mulder awoke in the early morning to a soft nudging to his side, which had three weeks before became a ritual of sorts. A sleepy smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Scully was curled up against Mulder with her eight month pregnant belly pressed into his side. Careful not to wake her, he scooted down in their bed far enough to kiss the ever present 'bump' and then lay his cheek against it. He spoke softly to his offspring, doling out family advice or singing childhood lullabyes. Most of the time his voice would evoke a thump to his cheek which in turn would wake Scully with a soft grunt. Mulder kissed Scully's cheek, gathered a pair of sweats and boxers and headed off to take a shower. The distant sound of water running brought her further out of the sleepy haze in which she was basking. As carefully as her heavy girth would allow, Scully rolled out of bed and headed for the bathroom, grabbing her robe on the way. After relieving the pressure of her bladder, she slipped off her gown and joined Mulder in the shower. "It's about time," Mulder said, turning as she stepped carefully, with his help, into the tub. "Hmmm..." Scully muttered, wrapping her arms around his waist. "This feels nice." Mulder wrapped his arms around her and then started massaging her back with a soapy wash cloth. He smiled as she hummed against his chest. "I do believe, Agent Mulder, you're a keeper." A deep rumbling chuckle was his only reply. * * * * * * * Kelly rolled over, pulled the pillow over her head trying to put a barrier between her and the sounds of giggles and moans penetrating the walls. When the noices subsided and the running of water ceased, she groaned and excavated her head from her cave of pillows. Coming up for air, she wiped the tangled mop of red hair out of her eyes, crawled out of bed and walked slowly toward the kitchen. She was a woman on a mission. A woman in need of caffeine. A knock on the front door drew Kelly from the kitchen before she was able to pour her first cup of the morning. Looking through the peep hole, she cringed from eyeing the figure behind the door, then slumped against it and sighed. *Damn, not before I have at least one cup of coffee* She drew in a breath, unlocked the door and pulled it open to her find her cousin scowling at her. "Why hello, Bill. What brings you here so early?" Kelly's acid tone echoed in the entryway as she turned and went back into the kitchen, leaving the door open for Bill to fend for himself. Retrieving a cup from the cabinet, she poured the coffee and sipped it slowly. Bill closed the door and stepped into the kitchen. "Get your bags together. I'm taking you back with me to Mom's. She said you were suppose to be staying with her." Bill's aggravating scowl seemed to be a permanent expression on his face. Coffee sloshed onto the counter when Kelly suddenly and angrily plopped the cup down, turning to Bill with fire in her eyes and her chest heaving with rage. "Excuse me, William Scully, but who do you think you are coming into Dana's home and ordering me around? You sure as hell aren't either one of my parents. I should know, because they passed away six years ago." Kelly paused to take a breath and then let loose again. "You know Bill, ever since we were children you had bullied me around and anyone that was younger than you. I haven't seen you in over twenty years and here you are trying to bully me again. Well it ain't gonna happen. Not this time. "I honestly don't know how Dana stood for it all those years ago. I can see why Melissa left when she did and I'm so grateful, now, that my parents moved when they did. And from what I can see and hear, you haven't changed one bit." Bill took one step forward but stopped when she held up her hand. "Kelly, I think it would be best if you came back with me. I don't think you should stay here with ... him. I don't think ..." Kelly interrupted Bill before he could finish. "Him?! You don't think?!" her voice rising with each breath. "You know Bill, that's just *one* of your biggest problems. You *don't* think. Mulder has treated me with more respect than you can muster up in your little finger and he's made me feel more welcome than you ever did even though he had never met me until yesterday. His *only* reason to do so was because I was Dana's cousin." Kelly paused to gather more steam and aimed her rage at Bill once more. "Apparently you didn't take the time to understand why I'm staying with Mulder and Dana. If you had, you would have known that they had invited me to stay with them for the weekend since you were gonna be in town and I would be going to Aunt Maggie's on Monday. Furthermore, I do not want to celebrate my birthday with *you*, Bill. Mulder and Dana are taking me out for the day to celebrate and I, for one, am going to enjoy it. "Now, if you don't mind, and I could care less if you do, I need to go take a shower. *Mulder* is taking me out to breakfast while Dana rests a little longer and then *we're* all going out for the day. Aunt Maggie understood and didn't mind, which is more than I can say about you. So, if you'll excuse me. You know the way out." "Kelly, come back here," Bill called out to her retreating form, his anger rising. Without turning around, she replied. "Go. To. Hell. Bill." With a glance over her shoulder toward Bill and with a sweet smile she said, "Have a nice day. I know I will." Bill watched red-faced, fury and regret vying for attention, as she walked off toward her room and out of his sight. Fury won and he walked out, slamming the door behind him. As she rounded the corner into the hall on her way back to the bedroom, Kelly abruptly stopped when she saw Mulder leaning against his bedroom door jamb with a smirk on his face and his arms folded. Kelly grinned at him and lowered her head. "I guess you heard, huh?" Mulder unfolded his arms, glanced back into the bedroom and stepped closer to her, the smirk growing into a smile. He spoke softly, not wanting to disturb his wife. "Yeah, I heard. Don't worry about it. Go on and get ready," he finished, nodding toward the bathroom. She sighed her relief, gave him a nod of understanding, and then went about getting ready for a very special day. * * * Breakfast repartee proved to be fruitful for both Kelly and Mulder, a reference for the future. Laughter mixed with joyful tears was a product of stories, by Kelly, about some of Bill's most embarrasing moments in childhood and conspiracies of revenge performed by her. Kelly was immensely curious, so Mulder readily shared, although the PG version, of his and Scully's adventures with the X-Files. After a couple of hours of relaxed conversation, they rose, ready to head back to the apartment to join Scully. She looked up at him and smiled a brilliant smile. "Thank you, Mulder." "For what?" "For showing me a better time than I've had in a very long time. Thank you, Cousin," she finished with a kiss to his cheek. To Kelly's delight, Mulder had blushed and she chuckled. "You're welcome, Kelly. It was my pleasure. Let's go." They left the resturant with Mulder's hand at the small of her back. * * * Sunday The rest of the day and weekend was filled with the sightseeing tour promised, Mulder style of course, and to Kelly's ultimate ecstasy, a sci-fi movie marathon. Secretly, Scully took great pleasure that her cousin and Mulder were getting along so well. She remembered, all too well, the rough and rocky childhood Kelly had experienced. As with her own experience, her cousin's family moved around. She was happy to hear, after leaving California where both families were stationed, her favorite cousin had finally settled in Wisconsin. Scully had lost contact with her and mourned the loss for a long time. Scully had heard the heated exchange between Bill and Kelly but, with Mulder's protectiveness, remained in their bedroom. Although, she wanted to join Kelly and actually kick her brother's ass out of their apartment, Scully had relented when Mulder pointed out that in her condition she didn't need the added stress of her brother's pig-headedness. The call from Maggie on Sunday afternoon, let them know that Bill had cut his visit short and left early on that morning. Although, it disappointed Maggie with his abrupt departure, she had come to realize, with Mulder's help, that it was for the best. Maggie was looking forward to seeing Kelly again and having her favorite niece for an extended visit. * * * Monday Since Mulder's departure from the F.B.I. and Dana's maternity leave, they were able to escort Kelly to her Aunt Maggie's home. They spent a pleasant afternoon spinning tails of childhood dreams and Maggie's version of childish pranks between the siblings and their cousin. A hearty lunch of soup and sandwiches was prepared by Maggie and, surprisingly, Mulder. He readily offered to do so in order that Scully and Kelly could talk privately. He suspected with a smile after hearing hushed whispers and giggles, that Bill would be the prominent topic of their rap session. While enjoying the modest feast before them, Scully looked first to her mother and then to Mulder. "Mulder, Kelly would like our help," she started and with a glance toward Kelly, who was grinning. "She's decided to stay in D.C. for awhile." "That's great! What help do you need, Kelly?" he asked, placing his spoon down. "Well ... since I have no place to return to and as much as you would like for me stay with you, Aunt Maggie ..." she started to explain as she turned to her Aunt. "I think I need a place of my own. I still have a modest amount left from my parents inheritance and would love to find an apartment, preferably close to Dana and Mulder." Seeing the crestfallen expression on her Aunt's face, she rushed to console her. "Aunt Maggie, please don't misunderstand. I love you so much for wanting to give me a place to stay and I'll need one for a while but ... please understand ... I need a place of my own. It doesn't mean that I won't be visiting you. I suspect it will be moreso than you think. You'll probably tire of me being around so much." Kelly paused momentarily and then with glistening eyes she placed her hand over her Aunt's. "I haven't had family around me for so long. You, Dana and Mulder have been so good to me since I arrived, that I've decide that I should settle down here." With a tearful smile, she squeezed her Aunt's hand and then looked at Mulder and Dana. "I want to be here when that baby is born and ..." she faltered for a moment and as a tear slid down her cheek, she continued. "I know you would have loved for Melissa to be here for you ... and ..." Maggie clutched Kelly's hand as a choked sob prevented her from continuing. Mulder spoke when seeing the tears stream down Scully's face. He reached around and pulled her close to him, kissing her gently on the temple. "Kelly, I for one -- and I believe I speak for Scully when I say -- we would love to have you here. I know that Scully desperately misses her sister and seeing her so happy since you've arrived, I can say that you would be more than welcome." He looked in Scully's tear-filled eyes and smiled lovingly at her. "I would be grateful that you'll be close by if something were to happen if I'm not here with her." "Since Mulder has taken up writing, he sometimes has to leave for a day or two for a conference or a lecture," Scully explained to her cousin. "He tries not to travel too far since I'm so close to my due date and I know he worries way too much while he's gone but, with you around, it would help to ease Mulder's mind as well as mine. Mom is close and a great help, but having another helping hand would be more comforting." Scully finished with a groan and winced as a muscle tightened in her lower back. Mulder lowered his hand from around Scully's shoulders and started rubbing the sore spot on her back. "Okay, I think that's our cue to head home," Mulder announced. Mulder helped Scully from her chair. Maggie and Kelly followed them to the front door and shared hugs and promises of getting together again later in the week. Maggie closed the door as Kelly went to the front room window, watching as they drove away. Maggie retreated to the kitchen, giving Kelly the time and space she seemed to need. Kelly wiped away a tear and wistfully thought about the new life she would soon be starting. Coming to D.C. was a difficult decision. After six years and being an only child, Kelly had come to terms with the loss of her parents and left Wisconsin. She had drifted from town to town, not staying long and not finding what she was looking for. Arriving in D.C., literally, running into Mulder and then meeting up with Dana, Kelly had come to realize just how much she had missed her extended family. The unexpected and unwelcomed visit from Bill sealed her decision to stay and make a home, close to Dana, Mulder and her Aunt Maggie. She smiled wickedly to herself and thought, *Dana and Mulder will definitely need my help keeping Bill in line when and if he makes another appearance. Yup, I do believe I've found where I need to be. Look out Bill, Kelly Scully has arrived and has *no* intention of leaving.* With that last thought, she turned away from the window in search of her Aunt Maggie. Yes, she had found what she had been looking for. Kelly Scully was finally home. * * * * * * * The End Author's End Notes: Happy! Happy Birthday, to you! Happy! Happy Birthday, to you! Happy!
